When I power with 5v usb, the device gets super hot and won’t connect.
Sounds like it’s toast. Ran ok for a few years before though? Any idea what might have killed it?

Which part gets hot? One thing you could do is check for shorts on power. Try giving the board a clean with some isopropyl alcohol (IPA).
