Project Hardware Guidance - Running long strings LED's on ground

I’m trying to accomplish something similar to this sound reactive drum “tentacle” setup:.

Most of my projects have been centered around wearables with 200-300 LED’s, so this is new for me hardware wise.

I’ll have a Standard PB with a Sensor Board. The input would either be sound or accelerometer data. I’m aiming for 10m-20m of LED’s. I need some help with the hardware side. Context: This will be on the ground, it will be dusty, and it will likely be walked over occasionally, so it has to be durable.

  • 5V vs. 12V: I’ve used mostly WS2812B 5V for all my projects, should I switch to 12V here due to length? My inclination is to go with 5V for reusability with wearables.
  • Anyone have experience with cheap waterproof-ish diffusers that withstand light foot traffic? And I’d probably go with IP67 given the elements at BM.
  • LED pitch: This looks like 60 leds/m? I was thinking something like 2-3 of these IP68 LED’s from Ray Wu’s store.
  • Power injection - I found these JST power connectors with battery connector, which I then would likely hook up to USB power banks with an adapter. Anyone have experience with solder-less power injectors? Edit - just realized that some strips come with power injection connectors built in.

Overall I’m optimizing for plug and play and as little soldering as possible, so it can be assigned to others.

Patterns - I have mostly used 2D patterns, any favorites for 1D sound/accelerometer activated patterns? Or patterns that are close to the video above?

I would definitely do 12v for longer runs, and I would consider going to a 30 LEDs per meter and have a bigger distance to the diffuser. This will help limit your injection points, and if you expect foot traffic on top of your light runs, you’ll want something bigger/beefier for a diffuser anyway.
