Splitting 3D Mapping Across multiple PB via WiFi

I have a 3D mapping of pixels that I exported as a .json from Blender. When I upload this to the PixelBlaze mapper, everything looks great and is in sequence.

This is a map of 360 large LED pixels, rather than strip lights. It will use 3 Pixelblazes that each will send signal to ~120 pixels. The PB will each have their own powersupply module for their respective pixels and will not be connected together.

I want to use the follower via wifi option. I made the follower work in testing but am a bit confused how to split the map up.

Questions

  1. Do I load the full map on each PB and then it knows which pixels to control?
  2. Do I just load the map on the leader and then the followers have the map?

Nice! The easiest thing would be to split up the coordinates for each of the pieces, then adding a few extra coordinates for “phantom pixels” at the end that create a bounding box for the larger coordinate space that encompasses all 3. Those pixels won’t exist on the piece, but will cause the map to place the piece in the right spot. An example can be found here:

Each Pixelblaze in the group needs it’s own map, and LED settings, only the pattern information and brightness, and UI controls are shared.

Say if the whole piece is 5x5 but section one is goes from 1.5 - 2.3 and section 2 goes from 2.4 - 3.1 and section 3 goes to 3.2 - 4.3 … then in each pixel map, I add “phantom pixels” at the extremes such as 0,0,0 and 5,5,5

That seems to make sense. If I understand correctly, then each map would have the same phantom pixels but different mappings for the LEDs.

Then I just assign the index number in the Settings for each PB?

Should the maps be set to contain or fill?

In this case, if you have no pixels between 0 and 1.5 I would start at 1.5 for the phantom pixels. Likewise, if the last pixel is at 4.3 and there are no pixels between 4.3 and 5 I would end at 4.3.

The reason for this is that the patterns tend to scale to “world units” and if the total set of coordinates the map knows about goes from 0 to 5 then the pattern would extend beyond any pixels. Thats not bad per se, it would just be a little “zoomed in” more than it would otherwise.

Yep, just be sure to put the phantom pixels after the pieces real pixels in the map so that they are for pixels that don’t exist (beyond the number of configured pixels).

The node ID for each Pixelblaze in a group can be used for more advanced changes in pattern code. The pixel map alone will be enough to have each render a portion of the overall coordinate space. The node ID is handy if you wanted to make them do something else different in code, like respond differently to sound frequency data or render differently in some other way than just pixel coordinates.

Node ID could also be used as an alternative to the phantom pixels trick by using nodeId() and the coordinate transformation API through code. It’s a bit more complicated but you can do more advanced things through code that way, and each piece will have slightly more resolution for it’s pixel coordinates.

For most cases, contain is best. That will maintain the aspect ratio of your map. Fill will stretch it to fill the entire world coordinate space in each dimension. If you have phantom pixels that define a cube anyway like [0,0,0] to [5,5,5] then they would behave exactly the same since you already have a perfect cube of coordinate space.

Each of the follower PixelBlaze’s should connect to the AP created by the leader PB, correct?

Can I upload different maps to each of the follower PB’s after they connect to the AP? Or do I need to upload the follower maps before they connect to the leader PB access point?

Never mind, I figured it out by plugging them all in. I can go to the individual IP address of each PixelBlaze and change the map and settings. Everything seems to be working ok in testing.

Now I will set up the whole installation to see.
