Would a Pixelblaze be suitable for

I’d like to download a music (mp3?) file over wifi, then in response to a contact closure, play the sound via an I2S audio amp to a little speaker.
Would this be a reasonable thing to do with a PixelBlaze?

I don’t think so. Pixelblaze, specializing in LED control, is (intentionally) missing a lot of the pieces you’d need to pull this off.

I’d look into some of the audio and WiFi IoT boards from Sparkfun or Adafruit.

Yeah, not at all. A generic esp32 maybe, but honestly for the price/effort, I’d suggest one of the audio focused esp32 boards out there, since it’ll be both supported and standard. Either a lyraT or a ESP32-A1S
